IEM Toastmasters Meeting #195 on 10 April 2014



IEM Toastmasters Meeting #195 on 10 April, 2014 was called to order by Sergeant-At-Arms Seyed Mohsen Forghani, TM at 7.30pm with twenty five attendees coming from near and far:-

This meeting commenced with the President, Alex Lu, ACB, ALB welcoming all guests followed by attendees introducing themselves.

After completing a round of introduction, the President then handed over control to the Toastmaster of the Evening (TME), Tan Ken Wayne, ACB, CL. He introduced Toastmasters International (District and Club), meeting program and role-players.
Next came the induction of new members, Aaron, Hani and Patrick. The members were inducted by mentoring chair, Kanagaraj Pillay, along with their mentors –

Rhoda Omar, CC, CL and
Chia Meng Yee, CC, ALB respectively.
The session ended with IEM Toastmasters members pledge to support them in their journey with IEM Toastmasters.
Welcome to IEM Toastmaters ~ Aaron, Hani and Patrick!

The Project speeches session then began with five public speakers presenting project speeches:
• #1 Azlina Hani, TM CC#1: “This part of my life”. Hani spoke on her educational background and the various changes and lessons she experienced in the different careers.
• #2 Ho Aaron, TM CC#1: “My first step”. Aaron spoke on his mixed cultural heritage and of his procrastination in joining Toastmasters and the events that finally prompted him to join Toastmasters.
• #3 Suresh Kandasamy, TM CC #2 – “Improving People’s Life”. This speaker gave valuable suggestions on how to improve one’s life.
• #4 Anthony Kolandai, ACB ACM: Humorously Speaking #2 – “Driven Crazy 2″. Anthony had the audience in stitches when he spoke of his exasperating experiences with call centres.
• #5 Patrick Lee, TM CC#1 – The Ice Breaker: “The Child Within”. The young and energetic Patrick entertained the crowd with his humour and puns, speaking of his various interests and ambition to be a great communicator.
All public speakers met the time qualification.
General evaluator, Paul Tan, CTM, ACS then took control. She invited the following evaluators to present their evaluation of the speeches:
• Speech Evaluator #1: Chia Meng Yee, CC, ALB
• Speech Evaluator #2: Andrew Nathan, ACS
• Speech Evaluator #3: Rhoda Omar, CC, CL
• Speech Evaluator #4: Anita Wong, CTM, CL
• Speech Evaluator #5: Meera Shanmughanathan, ACB, CL
The timer’s report was presented with all speech evaluators speaking within time to be qualified in the voting for the best evaluator.
The general evaluator then invited other role players to present their report.
• Grammarian : Lim Suleen, TM
• Ah Counter : Lim Juleen, TM
Upon receiving the comments from the evaluators and role players, the general evaluator presented his comments. After she concluded, Timer Ng Yee Chia, CC presented his report for all speakers and role-players, including the general evaluator.
Next, Area E2 Governor, Steven Yong, presented his Area Governor’s report. In his report, the Area Governor highlighted the following points:
• That IEM Toastmasters Club was a high performing club
• IEM Toastmasters Club had many distinguished leaders, including the following:
• District 51 Secretary Engr Lee Meng Tze, DTM
• Past Division E Governor Robert Ram, DTM
• Past Area E2 Governor and Organising Chair for Semi-Annual Convention to be held in November in the Klang Valley: Alex Lu, ACB, ALB
• Current Nominee for Division E Governor: SKL Walia, DTM
• In terms of club achievement:
• The club had achieved President Distinguished 10 out of 10 DCP points on 11 January 2014;
• The club is to be awarded an achievement under the Baby Bloomer campaign, with 6 new members
• Membership in Area E2 has grown by 70%, with IEM Toastmasters contributing the most number of members;
• In terms of achievement in contests, IEM Toastmasters members, Robert Ram, Meera Shanmughanathan and Anita Wong, had swept all prizes at Division E level for international speeches, and even managed a 3rd placing for table topics by Robert Ram.
The President then presented appreciation to the general evaluator. He also presented awards to the following:
• Best Project Speakers: Ho Aaron and Patrick Lee
• Best Evaluator : Anita Wong and Meera Nathan
There were a few announcements on the upcoming events as set out below, before the President delivered his closing remarks for this wonderful Meeting. Meeting adjourned at 10.30 pm.
• The next club meeting #196 is on 24 April 2014 at 7.30 pm. Nomination for club officers for the term 2014/2015 must be given to the nomination committee prior to the next meeting.
• The Annual Conference will be held in Kuala Terengganu from 2 to 4 May 2014, and members were encouraged to attend.
